Mission:
Although spine surgeries are effective in many cases, there is still room for improvement to reduce complication rates and enhance clinical outcomes. While a large portion of the MedTech industry focuses on spinal fusion specifically, innovative approaches aimed at avoiding such procedures remain limited. Therefore, the spin-off Moving Spine AG seeks to develop and test alternative treatments and make them accessible to patients. One of its main projects is the optimization of the surgical technique vertebropexy, a procedure that stabilizes spinal segments by weaving tendons and textiles, without fusing them. This innovation builds on the research work of the University Spine Center Zurich at the Balgrist University Hospital.
Company Structure:
Moving Spine AG is a “Balgrist Beteiligungs AG” (https://balgrist-beteiligungen.ch/aktuelle-beteiligungen) and University of Zürich Startup (https://www.innovation.uzh.ch/de/stories/uzh-spinoffs-startups.html). Further shareholders include the co-founders of the company, beside others. The companies headquarter is in Zürich. Cooperations include international key opinion leaders and leading med-tech industrial partners.
Governance:
Moving Spine operates in full compliance with the regulations of the University of Zurich (UZH) and the Swiss Balgrist Association. In particular, the handling of intellectual property is clearly defined and governed by the applicable policies and regulations. Furthermore, research collaborations and service activities are regulated either through mutual contractual agreements and/or through the valid institutional regulations of the respective organizations. Medical products manufactured by Moving Spine AG are currently not used within Balgrist University Hospital. Currently ongoing studies on vertebropexy are performed independently trough mini-open surgery with certified allograft tendons and certified surgical sutures, according to the IDEAL framework for surgical innovation.
